why I started planning my years (and how it changed everything)
"So, what are you proud you’ve achieved this year?"
"So, what are you proud you’ve achieved this year?"
Twelve years ago, sitting on my porch, a friend nonchalantly asked me this question.
It was a simple question.
A recap of the highlights of 2010.
Easy, right?
My initial response was lukewarm.
I had had an okay year, but there was nothing that stood out as a major accomplishment or success.
“Well, what are YOU proud of achieving this year?”
Ah, got him! (or so I thought)
Without missing a beat, he started listing his proud accomplishments (chronologically!)
And even more, he stated what his failures were. Goals that he planned but either didn’t achieve or half-assed.
Then, there was silence.
His question still echoed in my brain:
“So, what are you proud you’ve achieved this year?“
At that moment, I realized I had no idea how to answer the question.
I had no idea if I was doing the right things, if I was making the most impact, or if I was making the best use of my time.
For the first time, I realized that if I wanted to make an impact in my life and career, I needed to plan my years.
Like… in advance.
I needed clear goals and a step-by-step plan to achieve them.
I've been planning my years ever since, and each year I'm able to look back and answer the same question with confidence and pride.
Now, at the end of each year, I have a concrete list of achievements, lessons learned, and areas for improvement.
Now, I ask you?
“What are you proud you’ve achieved this year?“
