Learn my exact note-taking system to capture the best ideas from articles, podcasts, videos, and so much more.

There are times when life starts to get hectic, tasks pile up, and suddenly just getting started seems like a monumental undertaking.

Here are five things you can do to get yourself going.

  1. Figure Out Which Thought is Overwhelming You. It could be about anything that makes you doubt yourself and your ability to accomplish your tasks. Once you figure this out, start to minimize it by breaking it down. For example, maybe you don’t have enough time to do everything, but you have time to do something

  2. Make a List. By listing out everything you have to do, you can see the reality of your tasks. Having the tasks floating around in your head can make them seem impossible to complete, but on paper they start to seem doable

  3. Pick One Thing and Do It. Just get one thing done at a time and ignore everything else until it is finished

  4. Set a Timer. Once you pick your one thing to do, set your timer, and commit to doing just that task. Research indicates that 25 minutes of focused work is best

  5. Make Sure to Reward Yourself. When you finish something, either a task or the timer you set, reward yourself for completing something. This reinforcement of positive behavior allows you to set habits, get things done, and most importantly, feel good about yourself
