A flashback story from when I was a little intern…
Open if you’ve ever experienced a “rude awakening”
I hit a wall.
My To Do List was out of control — hundreds of tasks staring me down.
It felt impossible.
How was I supposed to manage all this?
And I couldn’t help but wear it on my sleeve…
Until one day, my manager noticed my frustration.
He pulled me into a conference room and asked:
“What’s going on?”
I didn’t hold back.
I showed him the mountain of tasks on my list and told him flat out:
There’s no way I can get all of this done.
He paused for a moment, looked me in the eyes, and said something I’ll never forget:
“We all have a million things to do…
You’re an intern — this is the easiest it’s going to be. As you grow in your career, you’ll get more responsibility, and with that, more tasks…
But that’s not the point. The key isn’t doing everything. It’s knowing what actually matters.”
Not exactly the pep talk I was hoping for.
My stress levels shot up even higher.
Then, he added something that changed everything:
“You won’t always get it all done. But you will get better at figuring out what really needs to be done. Here’s what I do: every day, I grab an index card…
On it — I write down 1 big thing, 3 medium things, and 5 small things.
That’s it…
Some days, I tackle it all. Other days, I’m putting out fires and only get through that one big thing…
But as long as that’s done, I know I’ve made progress…
At the end of the day, I tear up that card and throw it away…
Tomorrow, it all starts over.”
I still think about this conversation today.
Ever since, I’ve used a version of the Index Card method.
…but it’s always being updated and refined, with time.
Each time, improving.
That goes for everything I do.
