A few months into my first job at a bank, I was overwhelmed.
I looked at my to-do list and saw hundreds of items. There was no way I was going to do all of them.
My manager could see my frustration.
So he sat me down in a conference room and asked "What's up?"
I showed him my endless to-do list.
And explained there was no way I could do all those things.
And then he said something I'll never forget:
"We all have a million things to do. You're an intern, this is as easy as it will get for you. As you get promoted, you'll get more responsibility. And more responsibility means more things to do."
I felt my stress levels rising. These were not encouraging news.
He continued:
"But you'll also get better at prioritizing. You'll know what matters, what doesn't, and what can wait.
I've got a million things to do. But I have the same time as you and everyone else.
What I do is every day I grab an index card and write 1 big thing at the top, then 3 medium things, and 5 small things. And then I do those things.
Some days I get everything done and it feels great.
But other days, I can only do my big thing because I'm putting up fires all day.
And that's ok too. I've done my big thing. That was my priority.
And at the end of the day, I tear it up and throw it away.
Tomorrow is a new battle."
Ever since that day, I've used a variation of the index card system. It's simple and it works.
Here's the truth:
